Barbecue Helpful Hints
Charcoal is available in lumpwood form (large irregular pieces) and as briquettes (uniformly sized pcs). Lumpwood charcoal is best for quickly cooking foods such as sausages and burgers; while briquettes are more suitable for roasting as they burn longer and hotter.
To Light your barbecue, put a small quantity of charcoal in a pyramid shape. Insert a few barbecue lighting blocks or spray with BBQ lighting fluid or paste. Light this area and as the fire spreads, add charcoal to the top and sides, then spread over the whole cooking area. It is not advisable to completely fill the firebowl as the BBQ may become too hot to cook successfully. As a guide, a 3kg bag of charcoal in a 43cm diameter grill should last for at least 2 full barbecue fires.
It takes around 20-30 minutes for this barbecue to reach its full cooking temperature, although this does depend on the size of the BBQ and fuel used (lumpwood lights quicker than briquettes). As the coals heat up they will become covered in grey ash when viewed in daylight and glow deep red when viewed in the dark. When coals are fully covered, the cooking temperature has been reached. If you need to replenish the carcoal, always add to the sides and not the to the center of the fire.
If the fire flares up due to dripping fat, then dash flames with a fine water spray.
When you have finished cooking, never pour cold water onto the coals to extinghuish them as this may damage your barbecue. Use old cinders, sand, or a fine water spray.
To clean you BBQ, soak the cooking grill and tools in hot soapy water after use. Dry thoroughly and store in a dry place. Do not leave your BBQ outside unprotected.
BARBECUE SAFETY
Stand your barbecue on a safe, level surface, away from flammable items such as wooden fences or overhanging tree branches. NEVER USE your barbecue indoors. DO NOT use petrol, paraffin, methylated spirit or lighter fuel to light your barbecue. Special lighting fluid, pastes and fire lighters are available from the market. Once lit, DO NOT move your barbecue or leave it unattended. Keep children and pets a safe distance from the barbecue. Keep a fire extinguisher handy. Remember that hot fat may drip out the bottom of the fire bowl so keep your feet clear. During use, the barbecue will become hot, so handle the grill, etc. with an oven glove. Ensure that the barbecue has completely cooled before removing the ash.
