It helps to prevent the stitching on the jumping mat from dryrotting as quick... One benefit also if you choose a color other then black is it
outlines the boundaries of the jumping mat which gives a great view of the edges.

This is an OEM Mat some of the rings are oxidized. Mat has never been jumped on. Just the humidity in our warehouse got to the rings.
